Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with caves and lake. It is home to Britain’s only known Ice Age Cave Art. This discovery is one of the most important prehistoric finds in the last decade. The art is thought to date to about 13,000 years ago and the images of birds, bison, deer and horse provide a glimpse into the rich culture and fascinating life of our distant relatives.
Creswell is an ideal place for families to visit as it offers open spaces for younger children to explore, as well as the exceptional cave tours for which Creswell is renowned.
A new centre for the Ice Age has been created. The exhibition spaces house state of the art displays and interactive elements to engage visitors in entertaining learning. The dream of creating a new museum for Creswell Crags to showcase some of the rarest Ice Age finds from the caves has finally been realised. For the first time in over a hundred years artefacts have been sourced and brought together from major British collections to illustrate this most influential period of human history. Let this nationally important exhibition guide you through the story of life in the Ice Age.
The £7 million project, principally funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with additional contributions from East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), is now completed and open to the public.
Incorporating state-of-the-art displays, a research and library room, collection storage facilities as well as a suite of rooms for education groups, talks and conferences. From the museum visitors are able to walk out into the limestone gorge and tour around the prehistoric caves.
The British Museum, a major partner with Creswell Crags, is one of several museums that have agreed to loan artefacts for display and as part of a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions. Other museums that have pledged loan objects include The Natural History Museum, The Manchester Museum, Bolton Museum, Cliffe Castle Museum, Brew House Yard Museum, Wollaton Hall, Buxton Museum, as well as material from the Creswell Crags Museum’s store.

"I took my children to Creswell and was very pleasantly surprised at how much there is to see and do at this venue.
We decided not to do the cave tours this time (but will definitely go back and do them next year) but instead, spent the time wandering around the extensive grounds, having a picnic and looking at the free exhibitions inside the main building. There was plenty of space to have a picnic and the kids had a great time running around looking for dinosaurs!
I can really recommend the trip out, as you can easily spend the whole day here, at very little cost."
